Fluoride can help if you
Ask us at your next checkup.
- Get cavities often
- Have sensitive teeth
- Have a dry mouth
- Wear braces or aligners
- Have crowns or bridges
- Have receding gums
For kids, too. Fluoride helps young enamel harden as permanent teeth come in.
How fluoride works
Two ways fluoride protects your smile.
Fluoride coats your teeth and keeps plaque from building up and hardening on the surface. It reaches your teeth in two ways.
- From the inside
Systemic fluoride
Swallowed, usually through public drinking water. While teeth are still forming under the gums, it strengthens the enamel and makes it more resistant to cavities.
- From the outside
Topical fluoride
Applied directly to the teeth already in your mouth through toothpaste, mouthwash and professional fluoride treatments to help prevent cavities.
- By prescription
At-home products
Depending on your needs, we may prescribe a fluoride mouthwash, gel or antibacterial rinse to use between visits.
Choosing your own
Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
When you pick out a fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash, check the label for the American Dental Association’s seal. Products that carry it have been carefully reviewed for safety and effectiveness.

Fluoride FAQ
Have another question about fluoride? Call us and we’ll be glad to help.
- What does fluoride do for my teeth?
- Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel. It coats your teeth and helps keep plaque from building up and hardening on the surface, which helps prevent cavities and tooth decay.
- How long does a fluoride treatment take?
- Just a few minutes. It’s usually done at the end of your cleaning appointment.
- Can I eat after a fluoride treatment?
- We’ll ask you not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes afterward so your teeth can absorb the fluoride.
- How often should I get fluoride?
- It depends on your oral health. Some patients benefit from a treatment every three months, others every six or 12 months. We’ll recommend a schedule that fits you.
- Is fluoride only for children?
- No. Children benefit as their teeth develop, but adults with a history of cavities, sensitivity, dry mouth, gum recession or lots of dental work can benefit too.
- What should I look for in a fluoride toothpaste?

Kind words from our patients
I know most people hate the dentist but I love it! And it especially helps having such a great dental team that I know I can trust. I love leaving with my teeth feeling clean and well cared for. Dr. Bryan and his assistants (both Jess and Aliya) are so kind and caring.

My experience with Dr. Labin has been nothing but positive! I have been going to him for years and he is very gentle, making sure his patients are comfortable before he starts any procedure. The staff, from the office staff to the dental hygienists, are all professional and go above and beyond.
