Types of braces
More choices than ever before.
Gone are the days of a metal band around every tooth. Today’s appliances are smaller, more comfortable and far less noticeable.
- Most common
Traditional metal braces
The most common type, made of high-grade stainless steel and more comfortable than ever. Add colored elastics for a fun smile.
- Fewer visits
Self-ligating braces
A special clip replaces elastics, meaning less friction on the teeth and fewer adjustment appointments.
- Less visible
Clear (ceramic) braces
Less visible than metal, popular with older teens and adults. They need a bit more attention to hygiene.
Gold braces
Stainless steel braces coated in gold for a distinctive look, at a cost comparable to clear braces.
- Hidden
Lingual braces
Custom-made to sit behind your teeth, so they’re hidden when you smile. Great for professionals, athletes and musicians.
- Removable
Invisalign clear aligners
Removable, nearly invisible aligners that straighten teeth without brackets or wires.
Duration of treatment
One to three years, and you help decide.
Treatment time depends on your age, the method you choose and how minor or severe your case is. A big factor in success is you: the more diligent you are, the quicker and more efficient treatment will be.
Before you start, we’ll discuss all your options and estimate how long your treatment may take.
- Wear elastics or aligners as directed
- Keep every adjustment appointment
- Brush and floss around brackets
- Avoid hard and sticky foods
- Wear a mouthguard for sports
- Wear your retainer afterward

Common questions
Orthodontics FAQ
Have another question about braces? Call us and we’ll be glad to help.
- How do braces work?
- Orthodontic appliances, whether metal, ceramic or plastic, place a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction to slowly move teeth into position.
- Am I too old for braces?
- No. Today, any age is a great age to wear braces. Clear, lingual and aligner options are especially popular with adults.
- How long does treatment take?
- Usually between one and three years, depending on your age, the treatment method and how minor or severe your case is.
- What is early (interceptive) treatment?
- Treatment started in childhood to guide jaw growth and incoming teeth. It can help provide a quicker treatment time later in life.
- What’s the difference between self-ligating and traditional braces?
- Self-ligating braces use a special clip instead of elastics. That means less friction on the teeth and fewer adjustment appointments.
- Are there braces no one can see?
- Yes. Lingual braces sit behind your teeth, and Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible. Ceramic braces are also much less noticeable than metal.

Kind words from our patients
I know most people hate the dentist but I love it! And it especially helps having such a great dental team that I know I can trust. I love leaving with my teeth feeling clean and well cared for. Dr. Bryan and his assistants (both Jess and Aliya) are so kind and caring.

My experience with Dr. Labin has been nothing but positive! I have been going to him for years and he is very gentle, making sure his patients are comfortable before he starts any procedure. The staff, from the office staff to the dental hygienists, are all professional and go above and beyond.
