Four ways to whiten

Not every whitener changes your shade.

Here’s how the most common options compare, from the professional whitening we provide to what you’ll find at the drugstore.

  1. From your dentist

    Professional tray whitening

    Whitening strength: Strongest

Whitening gel goes into custom-made trays that fit perfectly over your teeth. As the peroxide breaks down, it whitens stained teeth. Unlike strips, it whitens all of your natural teeth.

    Time
Usually 10 to 14 days, with results in as little as 3 to 5
  2. Over the counter

    Whitening strips

    Whitening strength: Moderate

Thin, flexible plastic strips with a film of hydrogen peroxide on one side, pressed across your upper and lower teeth.

    Time
30 minutes, twice a day. How long you use them varies
  3. Over the counter

    Paint-on whiteners

    Whitening strength: Mild

A gel brushed onto each tooth that hardens into a film, then dissolves in your mouth. Usually less expensive and less effective than strips.

    Time
    Varies by product
  4. Over the counter

    Whitening toothpaste & mouthwash

    Whitening strength: Surface stains only

Mild abrasives remove surface stains. They don’t lighten the actual shade of your teeth, so results are mild.

    Time
    Ongoing, with daily brushing

Using an over-the-counter product? As with any whitening plan, it’s wise to check with a dental professional before you start.

Professional whitening

From consult to brighter smile.

Tray whitening uses custom-made trays and a whitening gel only available through your dentist, so the whole process starts in our office and finishes at home.

Sensitive teeth?

Let us know before you start. Professional gels may include ingredients for comfort, and we can adjust how you use your trays.

  1. Talk with your dentist

The best way to start any whitening plan is a conversation about your goals and the differences between the options, so you choose what’s right for you.

  2. A healthy starting point

We check your teeth and gums first. Whitening works best on clean, healthy teeth, so it pairs well with your regular cleaning.

  3. Impressions for your trays

We take impressions of your teeth and make whitening trays that fit your smile exactly.

  4. Whiten at home

Place the gel in your trays and wear them as directed. You may notice a difference in as little as 3 to 5 days, with the full treatment generally taking 10 to 14.

  5. Keep it bright

Hang on to your trays. Your checkups and an occasional touch-up help your new shade last.

Beyond whitening

More ways to brighten your smile.

  • Dental exams & cleanings

Polishing lifts surface stains, and a healthy smile is the best place to start whitening.

  • Porcelain veneers

For stains that whitening can’t reach, or to change the shape of your teeth as well.

  • Smile makeovers

Whitening combined with other cosmetic treatment in one plan for your whole smile.

  • Wedding-ready smiles

Plan a few weeks ahead so your smile is at its brightest for the big day.

  • Dental crowns

Crowns and fillings don’t whiten, so we match new work to your brighter shade.

Common questions

Teeth whitening FAQ

Have another question about whitening? Call us and we’ll be glad to help.

Which teeth whitening method is right for me?
There are many products and techniques for a brighter smile, and it can be hard to choose. The best way to begin is to schedule an appointment and talk with your dentist about the differences between them.
How long does professional tray whitening take?
At-home professional tray whitening generally takes 10 to 14 days, although you may notice results in as little as 3 to 5 days.
Why choose professional whitening over strips?
Professional trays are custom-made to fit your teeth and use a whitening gel only available through your dentist. Unlike strips, they whiten all of your natural teeth, and the gel may contain ingredients for added comfort.
Does whitening toothpaste actually work?
Whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes remove surface stains with mild abrasives and can lighten your teeth slightly. Unlike professional whitening, they don’t change the actual shade of the tooth.
Will whitening work on my crowns, veneers or fillings?
Whitening only lightens natural teeth. If you have crowns, veneers or fillings in visible places, talk with your dentist so we can plan for a shade that matches.
Is it safe to use over-the-counter whitening products?
As with any whitening plan, it’s wise to check with a dental professional before you start, especially if you have sensitive teeth, gum problems or recent dental work.

Kind words from our patients

  • I know most people hate the dentist but I love it! And it especially helps having such a great dental team that I know I can trust. I love leaving with my teeth feeling clean and well cared for. Dr. Bryan and his assistants (both Jess and Aliya) are so kind and caring.

  • My experience with Dr. Labin has been nothing but positive! I have been going to him for years and he is very gentle, making sure his patients are comfortable before he starts any procedure. The staff, from the office staff to the dental hygienists, are all professional and go above and beyond.
