Oral cancer screening, at every checkup.

We’re dedicated to your overall wellness, not only your smile. That’s why an oral cancer screening is part of your regular exam. Like many cancers, oral cancer can be life-threatening if it isn’t found and treated early.

Symptoms to watch for

These can have less serious causes, but it’s important to have us rule out oral cancer.

  • Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the mouth
  • A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal
  • A lump, thickening or rough spot
  • Pain, tenderness or numbness in the mouth or on the lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue

Already included. Your screening is part of your regular exam. No extra visit needed.

What the screening involves

Simple, quick, and more than your teeth.

Our team is trained in a screening that examines your whole oral cavity to find early signs of cancerous and precancerous conditions.

Early detection matters

Finding oral cancer early can improve the chance of successful treatment.

  1. Part of your regular exam

We include an oral cancer screening in your regular checkup. It’s simple and quick.

  2. A look at your whole mouth

We examine your entire oral cavity, not just your teeth, for signs of cancerous and precancerous conditions.

  3. A gentle feel of the tissue

We also feel the tissue of your mouth and throat to check for any abnormalities.

  4. A brush test, if needed

If we find an area of concern, a simple brush test collects cells from it to be sent to a laboratory for analysis.

  5. A biopsy, if recommended

If the brush test comes back atypical or positive, we may recommend a biopsy.

Lowering your risk

Four habits that help prevent oral cancer.

A screening at your checkup is one part of it. These everyday choices are the other.

Avoid tobacco

The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid all tobacco products and only drink alcohol in moderation.

Eat a balanced diet

A healthy, balanced diet supports the health of your mouth and the rest of your body.

Protect your lips from the sun

Limit sun exposure and wear UV-A/B-blocking sunscreen on your skin and your lips, even on a cloudy beach day.

Ask for an oral exam

At your next appointment, ask your dentist for an oral exam. Early detection improves the chance of successful treatment.

Oral cancer screening FAQ

Have another question about your screening? Call us and we’ll be glad to help.

Is an oral cancer screening part of my regular checkup?
Yes. We take a holistic approach to your dental care, and an oral cancer screening is included as part of your regular exam.
What happens during the screening?
We look over your entire mouth, not just your teeth, and gently feel the tissue of your mouth and throat for anything unusual. It’s simple and quick.
Does the screening hurt?
No. It’s a visual exam and a gentle check of the tissue. If we need a brush test, it simply collects cells from the surface of the area.
What if you find something?
Many spots and sores are caused by less serious problems. If we find an area of concern, we may do a brush test and send the cells to a lab. If that comes back atypical or positive, we may recommend a biopsy.
Why does early detection matter?
Like many kinds of cancer, oral cancer can be life-threatening if it isn’t diagnosed and treated early. Finding it early can improve the chance of successful treatment.
I have one of the symptoms. Should I wait until my next checkup?
No. These symptoms may be caused by other, less serious problems, but it’s very important to come in and rule out oral cancer. Call us at (302) 645-8993 to make an appointment.

Kind words from our patients

  • I know most people hate the dentist but I love it! And it especially helps having such a great dental team that I know I can trust. I love leaving with my teeth feeling clean and well cared for. Dr. Bryan and his assistants (both Jess and Aliya) are so kind and caring.

  • My experience with Dr. Labin has been nothing but positive! I have been going to him for years and he is very gentle, making sure his patients are comfortable before he starts any procedure. The staff, from the office staff to the dental hygienists, are all professional and go above and beyond.
