Sedation options
Imagine not being afraid of the dentist.
We have a range of pain management techniques. We’ll discuss your options with you and help you make the right choice.
- Every procedure
Local anesthetic
Numbs just the area being treated. You’re fully awake and comfortable, and can drive yourself home.
- Mild
Laughing gas (N₂O)
Breathed through a comfortable nose mask, it relaxes you within 30 seconds to a few minutes. Five minutes of oxygen afterward reverses the effects, so you can usually leave on your own.
- Deep comfort
IV sedation
If you’re petrified of dental procedures, IV sedation lets you sleep through treatment and may let us complete all your care in one visit.
Before your procedure
A few simple steps for a smooth visit.
We’ll give you specific instructions, but these apply to most surgical visits.
Laughing gas? Unlike IV sedation, you can almost always leave the office on your own.
- Share your medications and health history
- Tell us if you have sleep apnea
- Don’t eat for about two hours before laughing gas
- Arrange an escort home after IV sedation
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing
- Plan a restful afternoon afterward

Common questions
Oral surgery FAQ
Have another question about oral surgery or sedation? Call us and we’ll be glad to help.
- Do I need to see a separate oral surgeon?
- Usually not. We perform extractions, wisdom teeth removal, implant placement, bone grafting and sinus lifts right here in our Lewes office.
- What is laughing gas?
- Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide (N₂O), is a colorless gas with a pleasant, sweetish smell. Breathed through a nose mask, it relaxes you and reduces sensitivity to pain.
- How quickly does laughing gas work?
- Most patients feel sedated within 30 seconds to three or four minutes. About a third also feel their cheeks and gums go numb.
- Can I drive after laughing gas?
- Almost always, yes. After treatment you breathe pure oxygen for about five minutes, which reverses the effects. That’s not the case with IV or oral sedation.
- What is IV sedation?
- IV sedation lets you sleep through your procedure. It’s ideal if you’re very anxious, and may let us complete all your care in as little as one appointment.
- Should I tell you if I have sleep apnea?
- Yes. Sleep apnea can affect how you respond to sedation, so let us and your family doctor know before any procedure.

Kind words from our patients
I know most people hate the dentist but I love it! And it especially helps having such a great dental team that I know I can trust. I love leaving with my teeth feeling clean and well cared for. Dr. Bryan and his assistants (both Jess and Aliya) are so kind and caring.

My experience with Dr. Labin has been nothing but positive! I have been going to him for years and he is very gentle, making sure his patients are comfortable before he starts any procedure. The staff, from the office staff to the dental hygienists, are all professional and go above and beyond.
